I recently picked up a DVD of the opera SALOME by Richard Strauss. It stars Maria Ewing as Salome--and she is barefooted during her entire performance! In fact, there are a few views of her soles, and they are quite dirty!
There's one other opera that I can think of where the diva is often barefooted, and that is CARMEN. |

Great thread! They're are a number of barefoot opera's Manon and Manon Lescaut are about an 18th century French prostitute who is sent to New Orleans which is a penal colony. Solo Perduta Abbandonata the aria from Manon Lescaut is usually preformed barefoot. La Cenerentola based on Cinderella obviously, Strauss's Elektra , there's others, these can be found on youtube .
