This blog page contains many of the classic barefoot photographs of the Sixties: http://lovelylifethejourneythroughthesixties.blogspot.co.uk/2011/04/barefoot.html Brigitte Bardot wasn't, of course, a newbie Sixties barefooter -she was one of the great ur-barefooters who was going around St Tropez barefoot in the Fifties. More on her later, perhaps? Oddly, the famous photo of Jean Shrimpton, barefoot in the rain on Kings Road Chelsea, doesn't feature. So, here she is: http://highlowvintage.com/2015/06/28/jean-shrimpton-jane-birkin-barefoot-high-low-vintage/ This one photo helped to foster a barefoot fashion look that was peculiarly English. Note that the dress is fitted -not a Mother Hubbard sack, as worn by many hippy chicks.

Interesting blog indeed, many thanks for sharing.. I am an avid collector of vintage glamour/sexy/porn magazines, and I love the "barefoot look" of the 60s/early70s.. so you have touched a soft spot.. In Italy we have a pop singer called Patty Pravo who often performed barefooted in the late 60s, and loved to walk barefooted also in the Street. Here is a posed shot of hers.

There are photos of genuine barefoot hippies turning up on Pinterest, but photos there often link back to malware. So, I'm not giving links. However, if you are a member of Pinterest you can use the following codes for San Francisco hippies: 15551561192254552 15551561192254404 15551561192254407 Patty Pravo has had a very long career! Impressive. BUT -not barefoot recently, I suspect.

The Bardot, Jane Birkin, Patty Pravo....great pics and great time for barefooting. I think the 60s and the 70s were really a golden age for seeing beautiful, free spirited women barefoot on the road.

Indeed they were.. bare feet were fashionable back then.. as demonstrated by this picture featuring a very young Catherine Deneuve in Saint Tropez (1961).. no fancy summer footwear.. Many female movie stars (I would make a special mention for the gorgeous Elsa Martinelli, who mostly performed barefooted in the 1956 movie "La Risaia" / "The rice paddy") were "picked" barefooting in the street by paparazzis.. most of these shots cannot be found on internet, but vintage magazine collectors (like me) sometimes have the luck of finding some. | Brigitte Bardot was perhaps the Dea Creatrix of recreational barefooting in the mid 20th century, although historically she was following a naturist interest which started in Germany for wealthy people in the 1890's and was taken up (to some extent) by CoCo Chanel after the First World War. Bardot is credited with starting what Wikipedia calls the "clothes-optional" revolution at Saint Tropez, and must be given credit for saying "enculé" to the varnished "haut ton" at Cannes and the haute couture of Paris. She was going barefoot around Saint Tropez in the later Fifties (some of the photos of her doing that are labelled "Sixties", indicating just how much of a pioneer she was). She is a genuine barefooter, who liked showing off her feet and who liked her men to go barefoot with her. Photos online are almost all copyright, and some are firewalled. Also, they seem to come and go. | I also suggest, on Tumblr, to check the site Vintage Barefoot...not bad at all. Maybe, for my tastes, a bit too much retro, you can see lots of pics even from the 50s, I'm much more into hippie girls, but interesting, for sure! |
